The practical answers: what we shoot, what it costs, what you need and how CUSBC fits with fullbore.
What do you shoot, and is it safe?
We shoot paper targets at 25 yards using rifles chambered for .22 rimfire ammunition. Smallbore is an extremely safe sport when the proper precautions are observed. Every new shooter receives a safety briefing and is supervised on the firing point.
I have never shot before. Can I still join?
Absolutely. Most new CUSBC members arrive with no shooting experience. Taster sessions run at the start of the academic year, followed by a coached novice programme in Michaelmas. Many first-time shooters go on to shoot in Varsity matches later that year.
What is the difference between smallbore and fullbore?
Smallbore uses .22 calibre rifles, normally indoors at 25 yards. Fullbore uses .308 / 7.62mm target rifles outdoors from 300 to 1,200 yards. The marksmanship skills and some equipment transfer directly between the two disciplines.
What is the difference between CUSBC and CURA?
CUSBC is the University smallbore club and shoots mainly during Michaelmas and Lent. Cambridge University Rifle Association (CURA) is our fullbore sister club and is most active from the Easter vacation through the summer. Many people are members of both.
Am I committing to regular training?
There is no fixed attendance requirement. If you would like to contend for matches and Varsity selection, regular training and league shooting are strongly recommended. Keen members commonly train for three or four hours per week.
What does shooting cost?
Annual membership is approximately £50 and includes use of club rifles, jackets and other equipment. Ammunition is charged separately; a box of 50 match rounds is about £5 and is normally enough for one training session. Fees are reviewed each year.
Do you shoot air rifle, pistol, gallery rifle or clays?
No. For air weapons and gallery rifle, contact the Cambridge University Revolver and Pistol Club. For clay shooting, contact the Cambridge University Clay Pigeon Shooting Club.
Can I keep my own equipment at the range?
Personal jackets, kit bags and other small items may be stored at the range within reason. Please speak to the Honorary Secretary before arranging storage for a personally owned rifle or ammunition.
