It was a phenomenal year for CUSBC and CURA. After a busy programme involving several inaugural fixtures, CUSBC retained all of the smallbore Varsity trophies. That gave everyone excellent cause for celebration at the first CURA Dinner since 2020.
CURA followed with victories in the Humphry and Chancellors’ matches, but individual success ultimately crowned Cambridge’s Imperial Meeting. HM The Queen’s Prize was won by Alice Good GM, a current CURA member and the 2021-22 Captain. Alice became only the third woman to win the competition.
We also congratulated Alice on selection for the GB Under-25 target rifle squad for its 2024 South Africa tour, and Katherine Fleck on her first cap for England in the National Match.
Michaelmas brought more than 100 new CUSBC members, most of whom had never shot before. Wins against Uppingham School and our alumni and friends left the club unbeaten at the end of term.
The first CUSBC Open matches produced excellent performances. Patrick Connolly won the final with 194 after first picking up a rifle that October. Luca Schwarz won the postal rounds of Novice BUCS, while Chris Denham earned a Half Blue in the Chancellors’ Match.
Thank you, as ever, to everyone who coached, organised and helped at the range. Developing new shooters remains every bit as important to the club as success at the top level.
